2018 MAKING A DIFFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

SHHH! SURPRISE SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE AWARDED AT DUNBAR HIGH SCHOOL

16 students will be surprised with Making A Difference Scholarships – awarded by Amy Witherite of Eberstein Witherite, LLP

“You get a scholarship! You get a scholarship! You get a scholarship!” Amy Witherite of Eberstein Witherite will channel Oprah Winfrey, as she announces the winners of this year’s “Making A Difference” Scholarships at Dunbar High School on May 29 at 10:30am. Sixteen students will be surprised in front of their entire graduating class, as they are announced as recipients of renewable scholarships and presented with a huge check!

The “Making A Difference” Scholarship, awarded by Amy Witherite, was created to provide financial assistance to students who have demonstrated leadership in their schools and communities. Since 2016, Eberstein Witherite has pledged to award at least five $1,000 scholarships to Dunbar High School students. However, additional scholarships have been added each year due to the high quality of applicants. In 2016 and 2017, a total of 18 students were selected. This year, Witherite will award the scholarships to 16 deserving students. The students will also be surprised to learn the scholarship amount has increased to $1,500.

“After we interviewed these students, it was impossible to pick only five. We were amazed by their accomplishments, leadership, and drive to succeed,” said Witherite. “So, I had no choice but to add additional scholarships to ensure all of these students can pursue their dreams.”

This year’s recipients include Laurent Shumbusha, who immigrated to America from Africa five years ago. Shumbusha speaks five languages and plans to study at TCU. When asked about his future goals, Shumbusha stated, “I am planning to work hard toward my Mechanical Engineering degree and to one day be able to help invent some air vehicles. I have always done my fair share of work and taken responsibility, at home, school, or anywhere else, and I am not planning to do any less in my life.”

As long as scholarship recipients maintain a 2.5 GPA and take a minimum of twelve credit hours, their “Making A Difference” scholarships are renewable. Witherite will award more than $40,000 in new and renewable scholarships this year and has awarded a total of $31,000 since 2016.
