Houston, TX (News)-A three-vehicle collision ignited an explosion so intense that it sent flames into the air, shook windows of nearby buildings, and even blew out several lights on Friday, June 4, 2010. The Harris County Sheriff’s office reported that a tanker truck was traveling westbound on the beltway’s service road, when another car apparently ran a red traffic light, causing the tanker to collide with a van. The impact caused the tanker to rollover, spilling nearly 9,000 gallons of gas onto the roadway and into the sewer system.
As a result of the wreck, an explosion and a massive fire erupted, lighting up the night sky. Witnesses reported, “Flames just started shooting out, hitting cars, hitting cement blocks, hitting grass, just burning up, burning up in flames.” The fire burned for over an hour before firefighters managed to extinguish the massive blaze.
Responding emergency crews rushed the driver of the van to Willowbrook Methodist Hospital, while the driver of the car was taken to Houston Northwest Hospital for treatment. They are both reportedly listed in stable condition. The driver of the tanker was apparently OK, and stayed at the scene to speak with police officers.
Police officials are conducting a full investigation into the fiery three-vehicle wreck.
