The Glasscock County Sheriff stated that two men were on top of a tank battery when they opened a valve, which subsequently exposed the men to hydrogen sulfide gas, a flammable, colorless gas that is toxic at extremely low concentrations. When rescue teams arrived at the scene, they discovered Johnny Mills, 65, unconscious on top of the tank, while Steven Waters, 27, had fallen from the tank and landed on the ground below. Mike Moore, 48, and Ernie Hicks, age unknown, were reportedly on the ground when they were also exposed to the toxic gas. Moore and Hicks were transported via emergency medical services (EMS) ambulance to Scenic Mountain Center in Big Spring, where they are in stable condition. Walters was airlifted to an Odessa hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Mills was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m. that day, when his injuries proved fatal. The official's cause of Mill's death will be released after an autopsy is completed. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is said to be investigating the fatal incident.
